Palatki Heritage Site – Sedona

We took a trip up to Sedona and visited some ruins left from the Sinagua Indians that are slightly off the beaten trail. The ruins are still managed by the Forest Service, but it’s a bumpy dirt road to get to them. It’s amazing how well preserved they still are even after being uninhabited for 400 – 700 years.

When you arrive at this site, you need to have an appointment for a “tour”. Really you just hike to the ruin and there’s a docent there to explain the site and the history. Interestingly, this site was used by may different tribes of people going all the way back to 14000 years ago although the Sinagua’s ruins are the most prevalent feature. There are still marks on the side of the cliffs from the Clovis people which are nothing more than scratches in the wall, but have been dated as 12k to 14k years old. Other groups that visited are the Clovis, Yavapai, Sinagua and most recently the Apache
