Metates in paradise

The wifey and I spend a weekend at a nearby resort to celebrate our anniversary. We were walking through the resort and came across one of their nature trails which looked nice, so we decided to have a go at it even though we were both in our flip flops.

The trail wasn’t too bad, though there were some slippery spots with loose gravel. Right around the middle of the trail where the GIANT boulders were, which are the main attraction, we discovered these metates. It was an unexpected find in the middle of a resort, but in this part of Arizona, it’s not entirely a surprise.

These probably date back to the Hohokam People 700 to 1400 years ago and were obviously used for a long period of time. I’m guessing this must’ve been a kitchen area and probably also some type of lookout as well. I’m sure there were other living structures and artifacts nearby at one time but have long since been removed or lost by the development of the land.
