Cave Creek Hohokam Ruins

When I started searching for ruins to hike to, I found that google maps can be a great asset when looking for Hohokam “cells” in the mountains. The cells represent the walls of the communities that have remained since the Hohokam peoples disappearance around 600 years ago.

This site is close to home, so it was a short 20 minute drive, and a 1.5 mile hike to the ruins. It is one of the lesser known ruins, not on any maps though there are a few blog posts about it. A ranger might take you by them on a historical tour, but otherwise it’s one of the less trafficked sites I’ve seen so far.

There’s a series of rooms that made up this community, and the walls are now reduced to piles of rocks due to time and weather, but still discernible. There are pottery sherds all over the place, and if you look around you might see some rocks that have been knapped to make tools, or possibly the discards.
