Verde Valley Caves

The wifey and I took a 1.5 hour down to the Verde Valley to get a little hike in. It’s only a 1 mile round trip hike with a 400 feet climb in elevation. At the end of the trail are caves that were used by the Hohokam Indians which lived there until about 1400 a.d.

Below the caves along the trail you will see many pottery shards, and the caves have been walled in for protection. As with all ruins in AZ, the mortar holding the rock walls together is subject to erosion but these are still pretty well intact. It’s hard to see, but I took a picture of the inside of one of the walls and you can still see where the fingers of the Hohokam (women most likely) plastered the mortar on the walls.
